    artArctica festival 2016

    The ecosystems and cultures of the Arctic are beautiful and inspiring – yet at the same time fragile. We believe that we have a lot to learn from people living in the Arctic, in closer connection to the world around them. That the Arctic is so much more than just an empty, icy landscape – it is alive, fascinating, full of stories.

    We passionately believe the Arctic is an inspiring place, and we want to share this with you.

    So we put together this festival.

    Like a snowball turning into an avalanche, artArctica festival is a small idea grown big: we’re now hosting photography exhibitions, installations, dance and music performances, feature films and short film selections – and we are lucky to have participants from every corner of the Arctic: Greenland, Canada, Russia, Norway, Finland, Denmark, the Faroe Islands.

    In the final stages of production, we have come a long way – and now we need your support to ensure we produce a high-quality event, for both artists and audience.

    We still need to cover certain travel expenses for the artists, as well as production expenses like printing large-format photographs and securing royalties rights for the films. By supporting this project, you are directly supporting grass-roots art-making in the Arctic.

    We are lucky to be supported by cultural foundations and grants, as well as various independent groups and
    organisations – and we need one last nudge, and that’s you. It’s the person we’re making this festival for: the
    Arctic enthusiast (even if you don’t know it yet), the artist, the admirer, the traveller, the story-teller. You. We
    need you, because without you our festival is just a private show.

    So help us make this festival a beautiful and unforgettable get-together – and be part of something bigger. Whether you can visit the festival, or live far away, but think this is the kind of thing that is worth happening, you can support us in one way or another.

    Nine Nameless Mountains – valokuvataidekirja

    Kutsumme Sinut mukaan rahoittamaan kesäkuussa 2013 julkaistavaa valokuvakirjaamme Nine Nameless Mountains. 45 euron lahjoituksella saat vastineeksi itsellesi signeeratun kappaleen kirjastamme.

    Kollektiivin matkan tuotoksena on syntymässä myös kaksi näyttelyä, Valokuvataiteen Museon projektitilaan toukokuussa 2013 sekä Sveitsin Rosseniéreen Alt+1000 valokuvafestivaaleille heinäkuussa 2013.

    Nine Nameless Mountains

    Elokuussa 2012 matkustimme yhdessä Pohjois-Norjan Lofooteille, jossa Yhdeksän Nimetöntä Vuorta (Nine Nameless Mountains) muotoutui tarinaksemme: halusimme pohtia ja horjuttaa tekijyyden myyttistä asemaa taiteessa sekä löytää uusia lähestymistapoja valokuvalliselle ilmaisullemme.

    Matka Lofooteille oli onnistunut yritys luopua yksilöllisestä tavasta luoda. Sen sijaan luotimme yhteistyöhön ja ideoiden avoimeen jakamiseen. Ajatus kuului: jos olet rohkea -tai tarpeeksi typerä kadottaaksesi itsesi, saatat lopulta löytää jotain mitä et osannut edes etsiä.

    Nine Nameless Mountains on valokuvataidekirja matkasta pohjoiseen ja tulkitsee uudelleen valokuvan road trip-genreä pilke silmäkulmassa. Se on runollinen ja absurdi tutkimus maantieteellisistä huomioista etäisyyden ja mittakaavan edessä. Kivi, vesi, sumu, hiekka ja valo lunastavat pseudotieteellisen paikkansa prosessissa joka on samanaikaisesti ystävyyden, valokuvauksen sekä sattuman ylistys.

    Tulevat näyttelyt

    The Nine Nameless Mountains -projekti valittiin sveitsiläisen Alt+1000 Valokuvafestivaalin 2013 kesän ohjelmistoon. Festivaalijohtajana toimii Nathalie Herschdorfer. Vuoden 2012 festivaalituomaristo kuului:

    Rahoitus

    Kirjan kustantamisen kokonaisbudjetti on 12 000 €. Rahoitusta kirjaan olemme saneet tähän mennessä apurahoina 4000 €.

    Puuttuvan osuuden 8000 € olemme suunnitelleet rahoitettavan seuraavasti:
    Mesenaatti.me 3 500€. Jäljelle jäävä osa rahoitetaan vielä haussa olevilla apurahoilla sekä omakustanteisesti. Parhaillaan haussa olevia apurahoja meillä on tällä hetkellä kolmesta eri lähteestä 5000€:n edestä.

    Hankkeen aikataulu

    Idea kirjasta syntyi loppuvuodesta 2012 ja vahvistui heti saatuamme sopimuksen kustantaja Kehrer Verlagin kanssa. Tammi-huhtikuu on kulunut kirjasuunnitelun parissa. Toukokuun alussa matkustamme Saksaan koevedostamaan ja päättämään lopullisesta ulkoasusta ja materiaaleista. Kirja menee lopullisesti painoon 5.kesäkuuta 2013. Kirjasta otetaan noin 1 000 kappaleen painos. Tervetuloa rahoittamaan hankettamme ja varmistamaan oma kopionne tästä ainutlaatuisesta teoksesta!

    Nine Nameless Mountains

    Maanantai Collective is formed by a group of young photographers from Helsinki.

    Group is currently working on a photography book titled ‘Nine Nameless Mountains’. Book will be published by German publisher Kehrer Verlag in June 2013.

    We warmly welcome You to join to fund our book project and to ensure that You get one copy of this unique book for yourself.

    The project “Nine Nameless Mountains” will also be exhibited at the Finnish Photography Museum in Helsinki (24.05 – 01.09.2013) and in Switzerland as part of the Alt. +1000 Festival of Photography in Rossinière (13.07 – 22.09.2013).

    About the concept

    In August 2012, we travelled altogether North to the Norwegian Lofoten islands were the Nine Nameless Mountains became our story. We wondered about the authorship of an artwork and wanted to play with the usual solitary way of producing photographs. We didn’t know what we were looking for, but it was an attempt to make a detour to the individual form of creation, claiming the power of the collective behind a common creator. Built as a Nordic contemporary fable, this project revisits the photographic genre of the road-trip through a playful attitude. And if that tale would have a morality, it might simply say: if you are brave – or fool enough to loose yourself, you might eventually

    find what you were looking for. With the mountain as a “leitmotiv”, the escaping horizon as a metaphor to life and the impossibility to reach an absolute goal, this story is a poetical and absurd exploration of the geographical and figurative notion of distance and scales – latitude versus altitude.

    On the way North, we played together with natural elements – rock, water, fog, sand, light, to create a collection of material – an excuse for the celebration of friendship, photography and chance.
